Do's and Don'ts
Thailand is a very tolerant society, especially toward
foreigners who are unaware of social customs. However, here
are a few faux pas to be aware of. First, do not point your
feet at another person or a Buddhist image as the feet are
the lowest part of the body and to point them at someone or
something sacred is extremely rude. Secondly, do not touch
another person's head as this is the most sacred part of the
body. If you are angry at someone, do not give the middle
finger, lift your foot (and get ready for a fight.). Show respect to older people by giving
them a wai by putting your hands together at your chest as in prayer,
and bowing your head. Also thank people who have
gone out of their way to help you in this manner as well.
Do not get angry or shout in public. This is considered extremely
low class. A misunderstanding is most often caused by language
difficulties. A smile and soft words will get you out of most
difficult situations.
If you like children, feel free to play with, smile and even
hold them. Children are loved in Thailand and if you have
children of your own, they will be showered with attention.
It is not strange for a complete stranger to ask to hold
your baby and everyone wants to touch him or her. Our baby
loves it.
Dress nicely or at least have clean clothes. So many times
foreigners come to Thailand and walk around without a shirt
on or with a tank top. This is fine for the beach but is not
ok for in town. Keep your shirt on - no on wants to see your
body, really!!! Wear long pants to visit the wat or hospital,
no matter how hot it may be.
Although Thailand has a reputation for the flesh trade, over
90% of the women are still very conservative in their views
about dating and sex. Treat members of the opposite sex with
respect. However, if you date a bar girl, chances are she
is dating you for the money so don't be surprised when she
disappears after receiving money or a new car. If you want
a serious relationship, take the time to learn Thai as you
will need to speak with her family and the chances are her
family does not speak English.
Try some new food! So many foreigners come to Thailand and
then look for food they are familiar with. Thai food
is amazing and if you can get over the idea that breakfast
consists of a bowl of cold cereal with milk on top, you will
experience a mind-boggling array of delicious food. Even vegetarian
food is readily available. You might even realize just how
boring that cereal and milk really is.
