NGO's in Chiang Rai
NGO stands for Non-Governmental Organization. Essentially it is an organization that does something a group of citizens feel the government should do but does not. For example, the Sierra Club and Greenpeace fight to protect the environment and create public awareness of issues like nuclear waste and genetic engineering.
In Thailand, the NGOs have become the government whipping boys and are labeled as a "treat to the nation." To protest against the powers of Bangkok results in you being anti-Thai. The current Prime Minister, Thaksin, even went so far as to state that if NGOs are receiving money from abroad, they are dangerous to the nation. Their work has suddenly become scrutinized and they have to be very careful that they not upset those in power. No concept of freedom of speech or alternative opinions here.
Even in the face of such adversity Thai NGOs still continue their work and Chiang Rai has a fair share of them. They exist for various reasons including human rights, agricultural development, community development, education for the underprivileged, rehabilitating substance abusers, etc. The missionaries, always looking for a new way to proselytize and put donation money to use, have jumped into this arena and set up NGOs that claim to help but always with the implicit expectation that you and your family will convert as they help you. This is not to say the missionaries do not do some good work, but why missionaries can not do humanitarian work without strings attached is still a mystery.
One big problem for all NGOs is funding. Almost all NGOs are non-profit and have to depend on outside sources for funding. As long as this funding is available, things are good. However after some years, funding can become difficult and the original problem the NGO was fighting for has either been solved or is recognized as unsolvable. At this point, the NGO loses its raison d'etre and members tend to look for funding for any similar activity. The NGO has become their identity, their existence and their livelihood. This is when things become difficult.
The NGOs of Chiang Rai listed below are at different points of this life cycle and we try to list them from one extreme - 5. young and full of fight, to the other - 0. jaded and should get out of the business. The missionary run NGOs are not listed at this time. If a category is blank or "n/a", it is because we do not have that specific information at this time.
