Food
There is no shortage of restaurants in Chiang Rai so there is no reason to discuss all the options but here are a few recommendations. (Get a free map at the Bus Station to help you navigate). For Western Food, go to the Old Dutch across from the Night Bazaar, north of Pizza Pizza on Ratanaket Rd. It is pricey by Thai standards but very good and the seafood is fresh. For Japanese food, the best in Chiang Rai is on Ratanaket Rd., about 2 km south of the Night Bazaar. It is run by a retired Japanese businessman who imports materials from Japan to ensure authenticity. For pizza go to Pizza Pizza on Ratanaket Rd. across from the Night Bazaar. Pizza Pizza used to be Pizza Hut but a dispute over the rights to Kentucky Fried Chicken (also owned by Pepsi Cola) led the Thai owner to break away and rename his chain. This is why the pizza and interior decorating are the same as Pizza Hut. For bread, sandwiches and European desserts, go to Baan Chivit Mai, across the street from the Bus Station, on Prasopsuk Rd. It was started by a Swedish Missionary and profits support her NGO. For Thai food, go to BaiBon, a hip restaurant with live music. It is on Uttarakit Rd. about 2 km from the Bus Station to the north-west. A place to see and be seen is SoHo, on the corner of Sanambin and Banpraprkan roads. For Chinese where you pick already cooked dishes from behind the glass, try either of the restaurants across from the 7-Eleven on Banpaprakan Rd. To taste traditional northern Khantoke food (served on small tables with you sitting on the floor) go to Saban Nga restaurant on San Khong Noi road, about 1.5 km west of the Chiang Rai hospital. For vegetarians, there is a great selection of restaurants that are cheap and easy to get to. Just say "laan ahan jay".

Here is the complete list of vegetarian restaurants:
Ma Daeng - 132 Pahonyotin Rd., south of the night bazaar about 3 km. It is across from the road to turn on to get to the discos (see night life). It is open from 6am - 2pm, closed on Sat. and Sun. 053-716-615.

Boonsita - 210/12 Prasopsop Rd., near the bus station, across from the old movie theatre. Open from 6 am - 6:30 pm daily. 053-755-055

Oasis Vegetaurant - from the night bazaar, walk east about 2 minutes past some barber shops. Chinese style veg. Open from 7 am - 8 pm daily. 053-740-791

Saneun - from Oasis walk east to the 3 way intersection and go left, turn right and walk straight through the intersection. It is on the left across from the flower stalls. 7 am - 7 pm daily.

Surapee Vegetarian - 621 Wisetwiang Rd. Closed Sunday. One of the hardest to find. After leaving Saneun restaurant, go North, past all the fruit vendors. At the main road take a left and then make a quick right. Go straight on that road past the old prison. Straight through a traffic light and then look for the restaurant about 50 m on the right. 7 am - 5 pm. 09-557-0481

Palewin - Across from Wat Pra Singh and Overbrook hospital. On the same street as the TAT office. Open 6 am - 5 pm. Closed Sunday. 053-714-043.

Noi Restaurant - 100/2 Uttaragit Rd, across from Condotel. Open 7 am - 3:30 pm. Closed Sat. and Sun. unless it is a Buddhist holiday. 053-714-480.

Laan Soon Ahan Tamachard (Natural Food Center) Across from Api Plaza, 414 Sanambin Rd., Open 7 am - 5 pm. Closed Sunday. 053-753-000
