Wake Up Tours Adventure Chiang Rai is proud to announce a partnership with Akha Life for our Wake Up Tours. Wake Up Tours take you away from the tour buses and trekkers and put you in an Akha village. You gain insight into their world by sharing smiles, working, eating and living together. You have the chance to learn about their traditional culture and experience sustainable development according to their traditions. Besides learning and living in a village, you participate by building or working on a specific project that assists villagers in a remote location. Past projects have included building a well, installing irrigation pipes and building a school. Each month the project is different. Akha Life was started by an Akha NGO worker, Arpee Sango. He spent 14 years at Akha Association of Chiang Rai, working for human rights, sustainable development, citizenship cards, education and maintaining traditional culture. He grew up in a small village in the Golden Triangle area and he knows from first-hand experience the problems the Akha are facing and how best to preserve the positive aspects of their traditional culture and environmental management. Recently one of the guest speakers, Matthew McDaniels, was deported because of his outspoken views against missionaries, the war on drugs and the confiscation of the Akha land. To learn more about him and his work, see www.akha.org We also offer one day tours of tribal villages when there is a festival so check here for the latest updates or join our mailing list.
